Recruitment for Archaeological Excavation Project
on the route of the proposed
N8 Cashel-Mitchelstown road redevelopment

Margaret Gowen & Co. Ltd will be project managers for the archaeological work associated with the construction of this major 41km road redevelopment project in Ireland.

The project commences in early March 2006 and will run in its first phase for 5 – 6 months, moving into its second phase immediately during the Summer and Autumn of 2006. Contracts for some field staff will run on into the winter of 2006.

The project is being undertaken in the context of landscape archaeological research and the archaeological sites revealed on the 60% of the route tested to date appear to be largely of prehistoric date. Many of the sites are small in size.

The ECI (early contractor involvement) project structure is unique in road construction contracts in Ireland.  The archaeological works programme will be integrated into the development works programme. The Phase 1 project (Cashel – Cahir) will have up to six teams working in different locations with field offices on site at each location.  The teams will work rapidly and move from site to site as the excavation of each site is concluded.  Post–excavation analysis will take place after the Phase 1 work is completed on site. This work will take place in Cashel and in Dublin.

Employment will be fully insured at full Irish pay levels. Expenses payments will form part of the working contract arrangement for all staff.

EU nationals will not require a work visa.  Non EU nationals will need a work visa.

Teams will be resourced with transport, as necessary, to and from site and within the project.  A list of available accommodation will be provided for all staff, but payment will be a matter for each staff member.

The project will run on a 50-hour working week, 8am – 6pm Monday – Friday.

The project will have seven grades of field staff:
                     Gross weekly pay   Expenses
                     (taxable)      daily
Directors (all positions assigned)
Assistant Directors (most positions assigned)      €559.00      €20.00
Supervisor Grade 1 (most positions assigned)      €514.28      €20.00
Supervisor Grade 2 (some positions assigned)      €469.56      €20.00
Assistant Grade 1 (some positions assigned)      €413.66      €20.00
Assistant Grade 2 (some positions assigned)      €391.30      €20.00
General Operatives (some positions assigned)      €368.94      €20.00

Each application – and each position assigned – is based on a combination of educational qualifications and field experience.

Knowledge of conversational English is essential for all positions.

Knowledge of written English and experience in excavation supervision, scaled survey and archaeological recording will allow candidates to apply for more senior positions.

All enquiries are very welcome.
